AdChat or Meta's own server?

Meta launched its own Ads MCP server in 2026. It's free, and still in open beta. AdChat uses Meta's standard Marketing API, so it works on your ad accounts today.

Meta Ads MCP Server: What It Is and How AdChat's Works

A plain-English guide to the Meta Ads MCP. What an MCP server is, what AdChat's can do with your Facebook and Instagram ads, and how to set it up in 3 steps.

Updated October 24, 2026

A Meta Ads MCP server lets an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT read your Facebook and Instagram ad data and, if you allow it, make changes for you. Instead of clicking through Ads Manager, you type a question such as "which ad wasted the most money last week?" and get an answer built from your live numbers. This guide explains what MCP is in simple terms, what AdChat's Meta Ads MCP server can do, how it keeps your account safe, and how to connect it in about three steps.

What is MCP, in one minute

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets AI apps talk to outside tools. Think of it as a plug. The AI app (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) is the socket, and an MCP server is the device you plug in.

On its own, an AI assistant knows nothing about your ad account. It can give general marketing advice, but it can't see that your retargeting ad set doubled its cost per purchase on Tuesday. Once you plug in a Meta Ads MCP server, the assistant gets a set of "tools" it can call: fetch my campaigns, pull last week's results, search for interests, create a paused ad, and so on. You ask in plain English, the AI picks the right tool, and the answer comes back with real figures from your account.

You don't need to understand any of this to use it. You just need to know that "MCP server" means "the bridge between your AI app and your ad account."

What AdChat's Meta Ads MCP server is

AdChat is a hosted MCP server built only for Meta ads, which covers Facebook and Instagram. Hosted means there is nothing to install or run on your computer. You connect your Facebook login once, copy one URL into your AI app, and start asking.

A few things set it apart:

  • It works on any ad account you can manage in Ads Manager. AdChat uses Meta's standard Marketing API as an approved Meta app with Standard Access. It does not depend on Meta's own Ads MCP being switched on for your account.
  • It works in two places. Use it inside your own AI app through MCP, or use AdChat's built-in chat at adchat.app if you don't have Claude or ChatGPT set up.
  • It is Meta only. No Google, TikTok or other platforms. That keeps it simple and focused.

What it can do

AdChat has around 40 tools. You never call them by name; the AI does that for you. Here is what they cover, grouped by job. For the full list with one line per tool, see All AdChat tools.

AreaWhat you can ask for
AccountsList your ad accounts, account details, and the Facebook Pages you can advertise with
CampaignsSee campaigns, create new ones, rename, change budgets, pause or resume, schedule budget changes
Ad setsSee ad sets, create them, change targeting, budgets, frequency caps and status
Ads and creativesSee ads and creatives, create ads from an image, video or existing post, upload images you attach in the chat or link to, edit creatives
PerformancePull results for any campaign, ad set, ad or the whole account, over any date range, with breakdowns such as age, placement or country
TargetingSearch interests, behaviors, demographics and locations, get interest ideas, and estimate audience size
AudiencesSee custom audiences, build website (Meta Pixel) audiences, lookalikes and engagement audiences

Things AdChat does not do, so you know up front: bulk edits, campaign duplication, video upload, customer-list upload, other ad platforms, and automatic optimization in the background.

Read-only by default

When you first connect, AdChat can only look. It can read campaigns, ad sets, ads, creatives and results, but it can't change anything.

If you want the AI to make changes, turn on Write Access in your AdChat dashboard. Until you do, any attempt to create or edit something returns a short message telling you to switch it on. Even with write access on:

  • New campaigns, ad sets and ads are created paused by default, so nothing goes live by accident. The AI only creates them active if you explicitly ask.
  • AdChat only acts when you ask. There is no autonomous mode and nothing runs in the background.
  • In AdChat's built-in chat, the assistant lists the exact change and asks you to confirm before it writes anything.
  • Your Facebook access token is stored encrypted, and you can disconnect at any time from the dashboard.

Connection details

The setup steps at the top of this page cover Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and Cursor. Here is what's behind them, for any other app.

Your dashboard shows the server URL:

https://mcp.adchat.app

Paste it into your AI app: a Claude custom connector, a ChatGPT app or connector, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and so on. Apps that use a config file only need the URL:

json
{ "mcpServers": { "adchat": { "url": "https://mcp.adchat.app" } } }

The first time, a browser window opens. Sign in to AdChat, connect Facebook if you haven't yet, and click Allow. After that you stay connected, as long as you use AdChat at least once every 90 days.

A few apps can't sign in. They can send your AdChat key (it starts with adchat_) as an Authorization: Bearer header instead. Treat your key like a password. Step-by-step guides with screenshots: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and other MCP clients. Prefer not to set anything up? Use the built-in chat.

Tips for better answers

  • Name the account if you have more than one: "In my Bakery account, ...". See managing multiple ad accounts.
  • Give a date range. "Last 14 days" beats "recently."
  • Ask follow-ups. The AI keeps context, so "why?" and "what should I change?" work well after a report.
  • Ask for a plan before changes. "Tell me what you'd change, then wait for my OK" is a good habit.
