Facebook Ads Audience Targeting With AI: Locations to Interests
Find the right locations, ages, interests, behaviors and demographics for your Facebook and Instagram ads by chatting, and learn when to go broad instead.
Updated October 24, 2026
Targeting is where many new advertisers either freeze or overdo it. Meta has thousands of interests, behaviors and demographic options, and the search box in Ads Manager doesn't tell you which ones matter. Chatting with AI makes this easier: you describe your customer, the AI searches Meta's real targeting options, and you decide together how narrow to go.
Who this is for
Anyone setting up a new ad set, or anyone whose current targeting was picked in a hurry and never revisited.
What you need
- AdChat connected to your AI app or the built-in chat.
- No write access needed to search targeting options or estimate sizes.
- Write access turned on in your AdChat dashboard if you want the AI to create or update an ad set with the new targeting.
What you can target
Meta's options fall into a few groups. AdChat can search each one directly in Meta's catalog, so the AI works with real options, not made-up ones.
- Locations: countries, regions, cities, postal codes. Searched with
search_geo_locations. - Age and gender: set directly on the ad set.
- Interests: topics people engage with, like "yoga" or "home improvement". Searched with
search_interests, andget_interest_suggestionsfinds related ones. - Behaviors: things like device usage or travel patterns. Searched with
search_behaviors. - Demographics: things like education, job titles or life events. Searched with
search_demographics.
All of this is called detailed targeting in Ads Manager.
Narrow vs broad: the big decision
Before you pick a single interest, it helps to know how Meta's delivery works today. Meta's system is good at finding buyers on its own, especially when it has a Pixel feeding it purchase data. Very narrow targeting can make ads more expensive because there are fewer people to choose from.
A sensible approach for most small businesses:
- Location, age and language: set these based on who can actually buy from you.
- Interests and behaviors: use a few to point Meta in the right direction, not dozens stacked on top of each other.
- Broad (location and age only): worth testing once your Pixel has recorded a good number of purchases.
Step 1: Describe your customer
I run a dog grooming studio in Austin, Texas. My customers are mostly dog owners aged 25 to 55 who live within about 15 miles. Suggest targeting for a Facebook and Instagram ad set, and search Meta's real targeting options for each suggestion.
What a good answer looks like: a location (Austin with a radius, or the right ZIP codes), an age range, and a short list of real interests such as dog-related topics, each with Meta's name for it. A good answer also says why each option is there and warns you if the audience is getting small.
Step 2: Explore interests
Search Meta interests for "dog grooming", "dog owners" and "pet supplies". Then suggest five related interests I might have missed. Show the audience size Meta reports for each.
Interest names in Meta don't always match everyday words. Searching shows you what actually exists. If the AI suggests an interest that doesn't come back from the search, don't use it.
Step 3: Add behaviors or demographics, carefully
Are there any behaviors or demographics in Meta that would help reach new dog owners or people who recently moved to Austin? Search for them and explain how each one would change the audience.
Life events like "recently moved" can be useful for local businesses. Just remember each extra layer can shrink your audience.
Step 4: Understand "and" vs "or"
This trips up a lot of people. In Meta targeting:
- Interests inside the same group are OR: people who like dog grooming or pet supplies.
- Separate groups (narrowing) are AND: people who like dog grooming and are recent movers.
Ask the AI to spell it out:
Explain in plain English who this targeting would reach, including which parts are "or" and which parts are "and".
Step 5: Check the size before you commit
Estimate the audience size for this targeting.
This uses estimate_audience_size. Details are in the audience size estimation guide.
Step 6: Create or update the ad set (write access on)
Create a new paused ad set in my "Grooming - Local" campaign with this targeting and a $15 daily budget. Show me the full targeting before creating it.
Or for an existing ad set:
Update the targeting of the ad set "Austin Dog Owners" to add the interests we picked. Show the before and after first.
AdChat lists the change and asks before it applies it. New ad sets are created paused. Note that editing targeting on a running ad set can restart Meta's learning phase, the period where delivery is unstable while Meta figures out who to show ads to.
What to do next
- Reach people who already know you: retargeting website visitors.
- Find new people similar to your customers: lookalike audiences.
- Building your first campaign? See campaign from scratch.
Common mistakes
- Stacking too many narrowing layers. Each "and" shrinks the audience. A few well-chosen options usually beat ten.
- Using made-up interests. Only use interests the search actually returns.
- Targeting areas you can't serve. For local businesses, location matters more than any interest.
- Testing too many audiences with a small budget. Five ad sets at $5 a day each rarely give clear answers. Fewer, better-funded tests do.
- Changing targeting every few days. Each change can reset learning. Give it a week.
FAQ
Can AdChat target by income? It depends on what Meta offers in your country. Ask the AI to search demographics; if Meta doesn't return an option, it isn't available.
Should I exclude people? Excluding recent buyers is common and useful. You'll need a custom audience for that, see retargeting website visitors.
Can AdChat upload my customer email list? No. Customer list uploads aren't supported. You can upload a list in Ads Manager, then use it in AdChat like any other audience.
What's the difference between targeting and audiences? Targeting describes people by traits. Custom audiences are specific groups of people, such as your website visitors.
