Quick checks

  • !Primary text is 170 characters. Only about the first 125 show before "See more", so put your hook and offer up front.
  • ✓Your first sentence is short enough to work as a hook.
  • ✓Headline length looks good.
  • ✓Description is short enough to show (it's hidden in many placements anyway).
  • !Add your image or video to check how it crops in each placement.

Happy with how it looks?

AdChat checks your ad, then creates it paused in your Facebook ad account when you say yes. No Ads Manager.

Why preview your ad before it goes live

Ads Manager shows a preview, but only after you've set up a campaign, an ad set and an ad. By then most people have already designed the image and written the text. A quick mockup first catches the problems that cost you clicks: a hook that's cut off, a headline that doesn't fit on a phone, or a price hidden behind the “Shop now” button in Stories.

It's also the fastest way to get approval. Freelancers and agencies can send a screenshot of the mockup to a client instead of a design file and a separate document of ad text.

Facebook and Instagram ad sizes

PlacementShapeRecommended size (px)
Facebook & Instagram feed1:1 or 4:51080x1080 or 1080x1350
Facebook feed (link ads)1.91:11200x628
Instagram & Facebook Stories9:161080x1920
Instagram & Facebook Reels9:161080x1920

If you only make one image, make it 4:5 for the feed and a 9:16 version for Stories and Reels. Meta can crop a square image into Stories automatically, but it rarely looks as good as a version designed for the full screen.

Instagram Stories and Reels safe zones

In Stories and Reels, Instagram puts your profile name at the top and the button, caption and icons at the bottom. Anything you place there is covered. Meta suggests keeping roughly the top 14% and bottom 20% of a Story clear of text and logos. For Reels the bottom area is bigger, about 35%, and the like, comment and share icons also cover a strip on the right.

Turn on “Show safe zones” in the Stories or Reels preview above to see those areas in red. Upload your image and you can download a PNG with the zones drawn on, handy for sending to a designer. These areas are approximate and change when Instagram updates its app, so leave a little extra room.

How much text fits

  • Primary text:about 125 characters show before “See more”. Lead with the hook and the offer.
  • Headline:keep it under about 40 characters so it doesn't get cut off on phones.
  • Description: often hidden, so never put anything important there.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram Stories safe zone?

It's the part of a 9:16 Story that isn't covered by Instagram's interface. Meta recommends leaving roughly the top 14% (about 250 pixels on a 1080x1920 image) and the bottom 20% free of text, logos and faces, because the profile name and the call-to-action button sit there.

Is the Reels safe zone different from Stories?

Yes, it's bigger. On Reels the caption, the button and the like, comment and share icons cover more of the screen, so keep roughly the bottom 35% and a strip down the right-hand side clear as well as the top 14%. These are approximate; check the latest guidance in Meta's Ads Guide before you design.

How long should Facebook ad text be?

Meta recommends about 125 characters of primary text, a headline of about 27 to 40 characters and a short description. You can write more, but in most placements the rest is hidden behind "See more", so put the hook and the offer in the first line.

What image size should I use for Facebook and Instagram ads?

Use 1080x1080 (1:1) or 1080x1350 (4:5) for feeds, and 1080x1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. Portrait 4:5 takes up more of the screen in the feed, which usually helps.

Do you upload my images?

No. Your images and videos stay in your browser and are never sent to us. We only save the text you type and the formats you preview, to improve the tool.
